My training career started about 2 and a half years ago at the Centre Of Excellence for ASD’s at Norwich city college. I stated attending the college before it gained its status which was awarded by the LSC (Learning & skills council),
To begin with a social group was set up and a discussion was held of the needs of ASD students, we needed are own quiet space and we also all agreed that staff needed to know about Asperger’s syndrome, in a mainstream college this is probably likely to be the most prevalent ASD, and other conditions such as SPLD (Semantic pragmatic language disorder), share characteristics with AS, therefore understanding AS with an open mind will help to understand other ASD’s.
3 students myself included put together a training programme and delivered it to staff. Staff were very respective and positive and quite a number asked could heir college come to the next session since he/she couldn’t attend this session. Which was a pleasing result as many of you will know voluntary staff training isn’t always popular.
Upon leaving City College and Moving to Manchester, One of the key figures at the centre of excellence Dr Danuta Lataskiski suggested that I could become a professional trainer at first I was spectacle since Id been training with2 others and therefore had helped to created a rounded training programme, everyone with AS is different so I questioned would one’s persons experience be enough for the important points to be learnt. Never the less I took onboard what she said and started working on a training programme delivered solely by me. Incorporating not only; theory and my own experience, but experiences of others I’ve known with AS.
I have a catalogue of other disabilities including physical ones and I came to a point of being unable to complete my college studies and work part time, I tried for a year but found the physical demands too much, I needed some kind of income and thought back upon what Id been told in the past, I had a few contacts in the North West already and so phoned and volunteered myself to train their staff, I got 2 initial training sessions, one was in a school in Manchester, obtained from cold calling.30 minutes after leaving I got a call from the affiliated junior school who invited me to come and train their staff, the following day the city council called to ask me to do a training session for their autism interest group. Through various other people I have gained more and more work, Only a couple of jobs have been through cold calling, and most have asked me back. Because of my training I started basing some of my college work around Asperger’s, I am creating a short film, and I am also creating a resource pack for those with an ASD who want to go to university. You can find more information of both projects in the project section of my website. I’m also an article writer forthcoming articles will be mentioned here,
